Introduction

Research from the Sutton Trust suggests that around 94% of employers consider life skills to be as important or more important than academic qualifications. Amongst these life skills they consider are motivation, resilience, confidence and communication.

Both at University and beyond, the ability to speak publicly with clarity and confidence for audiences of different sizes can give you a great edge – from presentations to sharing your ideas in group work, participating in debates at things like Surrey Decides or preparing for an interview situation. As with many skills, good public speaking comes with practice, but there are some top tips that can help you hit the ground running.

In this course, we'll cover:

  • Timing
  • Planning your content
  • Uptalk, vocal fry, and word stress
  • Effective practicing ideas
  • And finally, some top tips
