Safer at Surrey

Surrey was ranked the safest university in the UK in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey 2018, however it does not mean we should become complacent, so this guide sets out ways you can ensure you stay safer at Surrey.

Keep an eye out for thieves

  • Travel light (in terms of valuable possessions).

  • Keep bags closed and fastened.

  • Be aware of your belongings in crowded areas, especially when on nights out.

  • Get a UV marker pen and  mark up all your possessions.

  • Keep valuables such as laptops out of sight when walking around and be sure to back up work on a USB stick.

  • If someone tries to take something from you, let them have it. You are far more important than material objects!

Bike security

The best lock for your bike is a 'D' lock as these are less easily removed with bolt cutters. You can purchase a security marking kit for your bike which helps deter thieves and aids the recovery of stolen bikes. For more information visit

Keeping your possessions safer from burglaries

Student houses are littered with easy-to-loot, expensive goods. If you live with four housemates, that means five computers, five music systems, five lots of just about everything. Here are our top tips for keeping your home and halls safe and secure:

• Register valuable property on it’s free of charge and can deter a thief.

• Make sure you have sufficient home insurance.

• Fit window locks and ensure French windows and patio doors are secure.

• If you have a burglar alarm, make sure you set it every time you leave your home.

• Never leave door or car keys or other valuables in reach of a letter box or window.

• Do not leave spare keys in an obvious place, such as under a flower pot or a door mat.

• Keep your front and back doors shut and locked – even when you are at home.

• Don’t keep large amounts of money or jewellery at home. If you have to, use a home safe that is stored out of sight.

• Make sure your house looks occupied even when it isn’t. Get a neighbour to come round and pick up your post every now and then.

• Secure your garage and shed too – equipment kept inside can be just as tempting for a thief.

• Mark your property with an ultraviolet pen.

• Don’t advertise your new goods by leaving boxes in view.

• Never leave notes on your door saying you’re out.

• Never let workers into your house without checking their ID.
